Description

Spanish for Construction
Lakeshore HBA, in partnership with the LAUP (Latin Americans United for Progress), is offering a new, annual course, which teaches construction Spanish through a customized curriculum- covering the most common words and phrases used on a construction jobsite. Communicating with a workforce that is ~31% Spanish speaking can be difficult and creates barriers in training, safety practices and advancement for these employees. Students will learn reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to communicate more effectively with team members in Spanish in areas of safety, work instruction, tools, and basic conversation.
There will also be opportunities to discuss cross-cultural questions related to effective teamwork and communication.
This introductory-level course is intended for those who speak little to no Spanish, and is open to anyone looking to engage more effectively with their Spanish speaking team members.
In this introductory course, graduates will be able to converse in a variety of construction applicable topics including:
- Fundamentals for Giving Instructions- Instructions, tools and equipment
- Materials and Workspaces- Specific construction materials, units of measure and safety protocol
- Supervision and Organization- Schedules, organization of worksite, and common construction terms
- Communication in Key Situations- Weather/work conditions, medical emergencies, and heavy machinery
- Practical Consolidation- Team coordination, task assignments, and job site simulations
Registration includes all dates and attendees should plan to be able to participate in person (dates below) in order to gain the fluency and necessary language skills from this course. If there is an emergency or jobsite that does not allow for in person learning, virtual options are available with the understanding that this will not provide ideal outcomes. All materials included.
Please note: Minimum class size requirements in order to host this course.
